Forward-deployed engineer / comparisons

Forward-deployed engineer vs solutions architect: what's the difference?

A solutions architect typically designs how a system should fit together, often across many customers, and others usually build it. A forward-deployed engineer builds it: they write production code inside one customer's environment and own whether the result works. The architect's deliverable is the design; the forward-deployed engineer's is the running system.

What a solutions architect actually does

A solutions architect designs the technical approach to a business problem: which components, services and integrations to use, and how they connect, scale and stay secure. At cloud and software vendors the role is usually customer-facing and often aligned with sales, advising many accounts on reference architectures. Inside an enterprise, a solutions architect sets the design that internal or contracted teams then build.

Where they overlap

Both roles start from the customer's real environment rather than a demo, and both need the judgment to choose between designs. A senior forward-deployed engineer does architecture constantly; the difference is that they then build what they designed and live with it in production. Some companies blend the titles for that reason, and some solutions architects move into forward-deployed roles by taking on the build as well. The line that holds is ownership after the design: the architect advises, and the forward-deployed engineer answers for the result.

What the hiring data shows

Plank's census includes 18 FDE postings with "architect" in the title (1.4%), at companies including Notion, DevRev, Databricks. Architecture is part of FDE roles whatever the title: 41% of the 904 machine-readable job descriptions ask for distributed-systems experience, and 35% expect pre-sales or solutions work. Employers want the architect's judgment and the engineer's follow-through in one hire.

From Plank’s first-party census of 1,276 verified open FDE roles across 547 companies, observed 2026-10-30. The census covers FDE-titled postings, so it describes the forward-deployed side of this comparison; it is not a survey of solutions architect roles.

Which one do you need?

Forward-deployed engineer

  • The design is not the hard part; getting it working against the customer's data and systems is.
  • You need one person accountable from design through production.
  • Customers stall between an agreed architecture and a working deployment.

Solutions architect

  • Customers need guidance on many designs more than they need one built.
  • The customer has its own engineers, or a partner, ready to build.
  • The question is which architecture to choose, not how to make one work.

Questions people ask

Is a solutions architect the same as a forward-deployed engineer?
No. A solutions architect designs the system and advises on it; a forward-deployed engineer builds it inside the customer's environment and owns whether it works. Senior FDEs do a lot of architecture, and some companies blend the titles, but the FDE's job continues through production.
Can a solutions architect become a forward-deployed engineer?
Yes, and the design judgment transfers well. The gap is usually hands-on production engineering: writing and shipping code every day, debugging integrations against systems nobody documented, and supporting what you built once it is live.
Do forward-deployed engineers design architecture?
Yes. 41% of the FDE job descriptions in Plank's census ask for distributed-systems experience. The difference from a solutions architect is that the forward-deployed engineer designs for one customer's environment and then builds what they designed.
