Forward-deployed engineer vs platform engineer: what's the difference?
A platform engineer builds internal infrastructure so their own company's developers can ship faster — their customer is a colleague. A forward-deployed engineer builds inside an external customer's environment so that customer gets a working system — their customer is a customer. Both are infrastructure-heavy and integration-heavy; they point in opposite directions.

What a platform engineer actually does
A platform engineer builds and runs the internal systems other engineers depend on: CI/CD, deployment tooling, observability, service scaffolding, developer environments. Success is measured in the productivity and reliability of the engineering organization around them.
Where they overlap
The technical overlap is substantial and underrated: 39% of FDE job descriptions ask for distributed systems experience, and the day-to-day work — plumbing systems together, debugging across boundaries, owning something in production — is recognisably the same craft. Platform engineers are among the more reliable converts into forward deployment for exactly this reason. What has to be learned is the customer-facing half, which is not a small half.

34 postings — 3.5% of the census — pair forward-deployed with data, platform, or infrastructure engineering in the title, at companies including Cohere, Palantir, Defense Unicorns, Spear AI. Alongside the 39% of job descriptions asking for distributed systems experience, it suggests employers see infrastructure depth as a genuine route into the role.
