A professional services engineer, whether in a vendor's PS arm or at a systems integrator, delivers an agreed implementation against a statement of work. Scope, timeline, and acceptance criteria are negotiated up front, change requests are the mechanism for anything outside them, and the business is measured on utilization and margin.

Questions people ask

Is forward-deployed engineering just consulting with a new name?
It is the most common objection, and the honest answer is that it becomes consulting whenever the learning loop is missing. What distinguishes it is that findings from a deployment are supposed to change the product, so each engagement lowers the cost of the next. A forward-deployed team whose work never reaches the roadmap is a professional services team with better branding.
How is an FDE different from a systems integrator?
A systems integrator implements against an agreed scope for a fee and is structurally rewarded for hours. A forward-deployed engineer is usually employed by the vendor whose product is being deployed, is accountable for the outcome rather than the scope, and has an incentive to make the next deployment need fewer hours, not more.
Do forward-deployed engineers work on a statement of work?
